Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal, is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous and thus increase its surface area. This increased surface area makes activated carbon highly effective for adsorption, a process in which molecules or particles adhere to the surface of the material. The word "activated" is used because the carbon undergoes a treatment that opens up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms.
